Expertise, vigilance, and commitment: the story behind the AQUA-CJ station

At PARATRONIC, we design reliable technological solutions for monitoring natural environments and managing water-related risks. It is as part of this commitment to innovation and ecosystem protection that our R&D teams have developed the AQUA-CJdata acquisition station.

Beyond its technical performance, the choice of the name—AQUA-CJ—was no accident. Through the acronym “CJ,” we wanted to honor a leading figure in French hydrology and environmental conservation: the biologist Christine JEAN.

A Life Devoted to the Scientific Ecology of Waterways

Christine JEAN is an agricultural engineer and holds a master’s degree in ecology, with a specialization in hydrology, from Paul Verlaine University in Metz.

During the 1980s, large-scale water management projects threatened to profoundly alter the character of the Loire, recognized as Europe’s last great wild river. Faced with the prospect of the construction of several large dams, she put her expertise to work in support of a different vision for river management.

Collective Action for a “Living Loire”

Christine JEAN, by uniting numerous local organizations under the banner of the SOS Loire Vivante collective, coordinated a campaign that led to the implementation of an alternative integrated watershed management program, the Plan Loire Grandeur Nature. This innovative program laid the groundwork for a new culture of natural risk management, prioritizing the reduction of vulnerability to flooding over systematic concrete construction, and enabling the restoration of the river’s ecological continuity for migratory fish such as wild salmon.

For her pivotal role, she received the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in 1992, and in 1999 she was named one of Time magazine’s “Heroes for the Planet,” which dubbed her “Madame Loire” at the time.

A source of inspiration for our monitoring technology: the AQUA-CJ data acquisition station

Christine JEAN’s dedication reminds us every day that water is a living, powerful, and precious resource that must be measured accurately in order to better protect it. This is precisely what our AQUA-CJ data acquisition system is used for.

French Fab

Designed and manufactured at our facilities in Reyrieux (Ain), this modular, energy-efficient station was designed to blend seamlessly into remote, self-contained measurement sites. Its durability in harsh weather conditions, combined with its large data storage capacity (over 13 GB) and multiple communication modes (Wi-Fi, satellite, 2G/3G/4G, LoRaWAN), makes it the tool of choice for flood risk monitoring and tracking measurements in aquatic environments.

Naming our AQUA-CJ equipment is a way to honor an inspiring hydrologist and to carry on the values of scientific rigor, vigilance, and respect for the balance of life that she chose to embody.
