The adelie System seen in the press: Forest fire detection in the Charente Maritime

Charente-Maritime, a department to be protected

The risk of forest fires is present in many areas of the Charente-Maritime department:

  • the forest of the double Saintongeaise,
  • the Massif de la Lande,
  • the forest of La Coubre,
  • the forests of the island of Oléron and the island of Ré...

The SDIS17 (Departmental Fire and Rescue Service of Charente Maritime) is very involved in the fight against fires in the natural environment.

Colonel Didier Marcaillou, director of the SDIS17: "Charente-Maritime has 67 fire and rescue centres. 55 are run solely by volunteer firefighters and 12 with volunteer and professional firefighters" (Source: France Bleu)

In order to better understand the risk of fire in the forest areas of Charente-Maritime, the SDIS17 called on PARATRONIC to set up an automatic forest fire detection system: the ADELIE system (Alert, Detection and Localisation of Fires).

"They are the eyes of the Charente Maritime fire brigade: 12 cameras are placed on watchtowers or water towers to spot any outbreak of fire. At the other end, at the departmental fire and rescue service, a human eye checks each alert sent by this automatic surveillance. [The cameras have been installed at strategic points to cover all the major forests in the department.

[In 2017], this surveillance system detected 65 fire starts in Charente-Maritime. This early detection made it possible to limit the area of forest burnt to 35 hectares." Source: Report by Marie-Ange Cristofari for France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

"For decades, in our department, firefighters have been monitoring the most fragile massifs from watchtowers scattered throughout the forest. Depending on the weather conditions, which change the level of risk of fire outbreaks every day, the SDIS hired firefighters to watch from the top of these towers. They worked with means that have become obsolete today.

As part of the modernisation of its working tools, the SDIS 17 has acquired an automatic forest fire detection system equipped with the latest technology. After 4 years of studies, the company PARATRONIC was chosen to develop this system called ADELIE.

From now on, from 11 high points spread throughout the main forest areas of the Charente Maritime, digital cameras detect the presence of the slightest suspicious smoke. All the images collected are transmitted live by radio to the command centre in La Rochelle.

In this SDIS operational centre, an operator is on standby to react to the slightest alert, and help is immediately provided.

Reliable, functional and innovative, ADELIE enables the detection and precise location of fire outbreaks very quickly. As soon as a glow or smoke is detected by the system, the alarm is transmitted to the operator on duty.

The latter, located in one of the two supervision and control centres (either at the CODIS or at the Jonzac rescue centre in the south of the department), remotely controls a camera for detecting the incident. It locates the disaster on a map and informs the alert processing centre, which can instantly engage the appropriate response resources.

Thanks to this device, the CODIS can visualise the development of the fire live, identify sensitive points and anticipate reinforcements.

This system was inaugurated in the spring and the department's elected representatives noted that the fire brigade was paying close attention to the safety of this natural heritage. The ADELIE system will make it possible to better understand this risk and to combat it more effectively.
