Landslide monitoring
The Cliets site, located on the road to the Gorges de l'Arly, has been monitored since 2013 due to previous landslides (1996 and 2003) and high risks of new falls.
This is a 10,000m3 area, followed by :
After another major landslide in 2014, the site will be placed under protection with steel structures and nets.
For 4 years, the device fulfils its role, but the instrumentation in place makes it possible to detect worrying displacements on February 7, 2019.
The next day, noting that the risks were too high, the Savoie Department (73) and the SAGE decided to close the Gorges de l'Arly road.
In the following days, characterized by bad weather conditions, the movements intensify and trigger a gigantic landslide of about 8000m3 of rock that tears off all the protections.
Although the work to clear the road will be costly, the professionalism of the SAGE and the reliability of the monitoring systems put in place has made it possible toavoid harming users, since no human toll is to be deplored .
At the same time, the measuring tools will be reinforced because another 4000m3 mass is still very unstable.
The road is currently closed to traffic and no provisional road rehabilitation is envisaged.
The assessment conducted in the field after the landslide showed the persistence of significant residual landslide risks (approximately 25,000m3 of very unstable materials in the slope, including 6,000m3 threatening to collapse in the short term).
On the basis of this observation, and in view of the major technical difficulties in intervening in the unstable zone in order to make it permanently safe, the Department decided to build a new tunnel with the aim of avoiding the unstable zone of Les Cliets. This route should make it possible to deviate definitively from the unstable zone.
The tunnel route chosen by the Department requires the construction of a new bridge over the Arly River about 20 metres downstream from the current Les Cliets bridge.
LNS acquisition stations have been specially developed to meet this type of problem: monitoring of sensitive natural environments by sensors, data banking and transmission, triggering of alerts, etc.
