Forest fires represent a major threat to biodiversity, ecosystems, economic activities and human lives. PARATRONIC, a French company based in the Ain region, is responding to this challenge with ADELIE, its innovative early fire detection system for natural environments. Already adopted in nine départements, including Charente-Maritime, Landes and Lot-et-Garonne, the ADELIE system is revolutionizing forest monitoring.
Far from the limitations of human lookouts, the ADELIE system is based on cutting-edge technology combining multispectral cameras and artificial intelligence. Mounted on high points such as watchtowers or pylons, two continuously rotating cameras capture images every 10 seconds. In less than two minutes, complete 360-degree surveillance is achieved.
The images collected are directly analyzed by artificial intelligence algorithms, developed by PARATRONIC's R&D teams, to detect the slightest trace of smoke. These algorithms compare a multitude of parameters imperceptible to the human eye, offering unrivalled precision.
"Everything comes from the images. Their quality and analysis by AI enable us to quickly identify even the most diffuse and imprecise smoke," explains Pierre-Moana Levesque, PARATRONIC's R&D Director.
At the slightest alarm, the system calls in the fire department via a third, remotely-controlled camera. This essential step enables us to differentiate between smoke and a simple cloud of dust. Once the fire has been confirmed, the ADELIE system uses telemetry or triangulation to pinpoint the exact location of the incident, depending on the number of towers involved.
Since its first deployment in 2005 in the Landes region of France, ADELIE has continued to evolve. Today, PARATRONIC aims to further improve its performance, notably by reducing false positives and increasing geolocation accuracy.
In addition to detection, the ADELIE system supports firefighters in fire management. During an intervention, it provides valuable information on the evolution of the fire. And once the fire has been extinguished, it can continue to monitor the area to prevent any further outbreaks.
With the ADELIE system, PARATRONIC confirms its commitment to preserving forests and fighting forest fires. This innovative, reliable and high-performance system represents a major step forward in the monitoring and management of natural hazards.
